Inleiding

Lage rugpijn is een belangrijk gezondheidsprobleem. De aandoening komt vaak voor en leidt tot hoge kosten als gevolg van medische zorg, werkverzuim en arbeidsongeschiktheid. Een recente publicatie van de ‘Global Burden of Disease Study’ liet zien dat van 289 ziekten en aandoeningen die waren onderzocht, lage rugpijn leidt tot de meeste levensjaren met beperkingen (‘years lived with disability’).1 Lage rugpijn heeft niet alleen grote gevolgen voor de patiënt, maar ook voor zijn familie, de gezondheidszorg, zijn werkgever en de maatschappij in het algemeen.
