Abstract

Wanneer het niet mogelijk is om te voeden via de natuurlijke weg (mond en vervolgens maag-darmkanaal), is kunstmatige voeding geïndiceerd. Via het maag-darmkanaal toegediend wordt deze ook wel enterale voeding genoemd of — naar de toedieningsweg — sondevoeding. In dit hoofdstuk worden de mogelijkheden voor enterale voeding besproken. Na het vaststellen van de indicatie voor enterale voeding volgt de beslissing over de samenstelling en de toedieningsweg van de enterale voeding.
Dit hoofdstuk biedt een leidraad voor het maken van de keuze voor de soort voeding en de verschillende toedieningswegen. Daarbij worden de mogelijke complicaties ten gevolge van de toediening van enterale voeding besproken en suggesties gegeven hoe de enterale voeding opgebouwd kan worden. Het hoofdstuk sluit af met enterale voeding in de thuissituatie en de rol van de diëtist bij deze vorm van voedingstherapie.
