Samenvatting

Eetstoornissen zijn psychiatrische aandoeningen met ernstige gevolgen voor het lichamelijk, psychisch en sociaal functioneren. In dit hoofdstuk wordt een beeld gegeven van het werken met mensen met een eetstoornis. Eerst vanuit kennis over pathologie, dan vanuit symptomen van de verschillende subtypen en de epidemiologie. Vervolgens worden respectievelijk risicofactoren en verklaringsmodellen weergegeven. Deze verklaringsmodellen geven een handvat om het ontstaan van de pathologie te begrijpen. Het blijft echter van groot belang om de samenhang van verschillende factoren te blijven bezien. Verder komen comorbide ziektebeelden aan bod en het belang om hiermee rekening te houden in de behandeling, alsook de meest gangbare en evidence based behandelingen van eetstoornissen. Niet voor niets beginnen de paragrafen over de behandeling met motivatie en bejegening. De afstemming tussen patiënt en hulpverlener gebeurt in een veilige sfeer, met een open, niet-veroordelende houding. Tot slot worden de prognose en het beloop van de verschillende eetstoornissen beschreven.
