19. Eetproblemen in de adolescentie

Factoren die de stoornissen doen ontwikkelen én factoren die ze in stand houden

Het in de psychologische hulpverlening veelgebruikte Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) onderscheidt in haar vijfde editie drie eetstoornissen: anorexia nervosa, boulimia nervosa en de eetbuistoornis. De adolescentie wordt vaak beschouwd als risicoperiode voor het ontstaan van eetstoornissen en meisjes lopen een groter risico dan jongens om een eetstoornis te ontwikkelen. Naast leeftijd en geslacht hebben onderzoekers nog enkele andere factoren gedetecteerd die het risico op een eetstoornis kunnen vergroten, waaronder het ervaren van druk uit de omgeving om slank te zijn, internalisering van het slankheidsideaal, lichaamsontevredenheid, lijnen, perfectionisme, impulsiviteit en het hebben van negatieve stemmingen. Aangezien eetstoornissen veel leed kunnen veroorzaken en een grote impact hebben op de persoonlijke ontwikkeling van een adolescent, is inzicht in de instandhouding van deze stoornissen van groot belang. In de modellen ter verklaring van de verschillende eetstoornissen staan disfunctionele denkpatronen met betrekking tot lichaamsvormen en lichaamsgewicht vaak centraal. Ook enkele andere verklaringsmodellen komen in dit hoofdstuk aan bod, net als recente trends inzake de behandeling en preventie van eetstoornissen.
