Samenvatting

Uithuisplaatsing wordt bij voorkeur voorkomen, omdat het een traumatische ervaring is die weinig effectief is en samenwerking met het sociale netwerk bemoeilijkt, terwijl er in het sociale netwerk volwassenen zijn die jongeren als ondersteunend ervaren: natuurlijke mentoren.
Dit artikel is gebaseerd op het proefschrift van Levi van Dam met als hoofdvraag: is het haalbaar om de relatie tussen jeugdigen en een informele mentor in zijn of haar sociale netwerk (‘wie werkt’) uit te breiden, de behandeling (‘wat werkt’) te verrijken met het unieke perspectief en de invloed en kennis van deze mentor, zodat de veerkracht van de jeugdige en het gezin toeneemt en uiteindelijk de uithuisplaatsing van jongeren wordt voorkomen? Een programmatheorie, meta-analyse, vergelijkend onderzoek en kwalitatief onderzoek laten zien dat natuurlijke-mentorrelaties de ontwikkeling van een jongere positief beïnvloeden en uithuisplaatsing kunnen voorkomen. Echter, er kunnen ook nieuwe interactieproblemen ontstaan als gevolg van de samenwerking met het sociale netwerk. Verder onderzoek is noodzakelijk.
