Samenvatting

Intimiteit en seksualiteit zijn menselijke basisbehoeften. De vervulling ervan is nauw verbonden met onze ervaren kwaliteit van leven. Dat geldt voor alle mensen, jong of oud, gezond of ziek, dement of niet. Er bestaan veel vooroordelen, taboes en onjuiste opvattingen over intimiteit en seksualiteit bij ouderen en bij mensen met dementie. Zoals dat deze behoeften met het ouder worden verminderen of verdwijnen. Of dat de vervulling ervan voor mensen met dementie en hun partners minder belangrijk is. Het is belangrijk dat wij hierop een complete en evenwichtige kijk hebben. Dat geldt voor iedereen, maar in het bijzonder voor professionals die werkzaam zijn in de ouderenzorg en de zorg voor mensen met dementie. Want wie niet goed denkt over dit onderwerp, handelt in de praktijk misschien ook verkeerd. En dan doen we mensen tekort.
