Abstract

Duizeligheid en balansproblemen komen vaak voor bij ouderen. In een Zweedse studie was de prevalentie bij 70-jarigen ruim 30% en bij de groep van 85 jaar en ouder bijna 50%.[1] In een metaanalyse van 31 factoren in relatie met het risico op vallen bij ouderen werden oddsratio’s van 2 tot 3 gevonden voor anamnestisch eerder vallen, vertigo, parkinson/parkinsonisme), angst om te vallen, gangspoorproblemen, gebruik van loophulpmiddelen en anti-epileptica.[2] In een review van studies van met name geriatrische populaties bleek de prevalentie van duizeligheidsklachten 20 tot 40%, waarbij bij 23% sprake was van vertigo.[3]
