Abstract
Abstract. The motivation for choosing teacher education is an important predictor for different professional characteristics. Motivation can be differentiated in intrinsic and extrinsic components, whereby intrinsic factors for choosing teacher education are positively related with studying and professional competences. Research within a person-centered approach indicates the different motivation profiles in prospective teachers. The present study aims at analysing these profiles regarding teaching relevant constructs such as teacher self-efficacy (general, regarding heterogeneity), attitudes towards inclusion as well as self-regulated learning and professional knowledge. A latent profile analysis with N = 312 pre-service teachers based on their motivation for choosing teacher education resulted in four groups (intrinsic, extrinsic, balanced high/low motivated). In line with our assumptions, we found differences in teacher self-efficacy and self-regulated learning with advantages for the intrinsic motivated group respectively the high motivated balanced type. Referring to the professional knowledge variable, no differences were found. Implications for future research concerning the motivation to become a teacher and resulting consequences for higher education are discussed.
