Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate the mean level and structure of self-concept in a sample of N = 297 kindergarten and first-grade children. Furthermore, the relation of childrens self-concept to early academic skills (i. e., precursors to mathematical and literacy skills) and the relation of self-concept to domain-general abilities related to school readiness were examined. Factor analyses revealed a pre-academic and a social as well as a play-related self-concept domain. Marginally significant correlations between pre-academic self-concept and early academic skills were found. Additionally, older children showed a more differentiated rating pattern by choosing a larger range of positions in the self-concept scale than younger children, possibly indicating an early differentiation of self-concept.
