Stigma’s als belemmering van capabilities voor mensen met een verstandelijke beperking

Samenvatting

Stigmatisering is een belangrijk aspect dat bijdraagt aan ongelijkheid. Dit hoofdstuk gaat in op drie vormen van stigma’s en hoe deze vormen passen binnen de capabilitybenadering. Het geeft daarmee inzicht in hoe stigmatisering het leven van mensen met een verstandelijke beperking kan beïnvloeden. Het publiek stigma vormt een belemmering vanuit de samenleving. Door vooroordelen zijn bijvoorbeeld voorzieningen zoals een wijkcentrum niet daadwerkelijk toegankelijk. Het structureel stigma is onderdeel van wetgeving en sociaal beleid. Het beperkt direct de mogelijkheden van mensen met een verstandelijke beperking, zoals het hebben van een betaalde baan. Het zelf-stigma is gekoppeld aan het individu en belemmert het kritische vermogen van mensen met een verstandelijke beperking om waardevolle keuzes te maken. Er zijn verschillende strategieën om stigma’s tegen te gaan, zoals gebruikmaken van ervaringsdeskundigheid, reflecteren op eigen handelen, stimuleren van kritisch vermogen van mensen met een verstandelijke beperking, en kwartiermaken in de wijk.
