Samenvatting

Acute diarree is een zeer frequent voorkomend probleem en kent meestal een kortdurend en goedaardig beloop. Patiënten blijken zich vooral bij persisteren van de klachten, bij ernstig ziekzijn of bij bloed en/of slijm bij de ontlasting tot de arts te wenden. Is er sprake van een ernstig ziektebeeld met koorts, dan is een fecestest naar bacteriën en parasieten aangewezen. De invloed van diagnostiek op het beleid blijft echter in verreweg de meeste gevallen beperkt. Bij chronische diarreeklachten ( > 4 weken) kan aan de hand van de anamnese een aantal oorzaken worden uitgesloten. Aanvullend onderzoek richt zich op het uitsluiten van een inflammatoire oorzaak, van een lokaal proces of van veranderingen in de vlokstructuur van de darm. Reizigersdiarree heeft meestal een infectieuze oorzaak.
