Samenvatting

ADHD werd lange tijd gezien als een typische kinderaandoening. Uit onderzoek blijkt echter dat er ook een groot aantal volwassenen is met ADHD, of met de minder opvallende ADD-variant (vaker bij meisjes). Doordat de aandoening op een zeker moment zo in de aandacht kwam te staan en bekend werd dat erfelijkheid een grote rol speelt, herkenden volwassenen zich ook steeds vaker in het plaatje. Het goede nieuws is dat ADHD goed te behandelen valt, in de eerste plaats met medicatie (psychostimulantia), aangevuld met coaching of gedragstherapie. Voor de verpleegkundige is een belangrijke rol weggelegd in diagnostiek, behandeling en herstel. Wanneer wordt gekozen voor medicatie, zijn alertheid op bijwerkingen en kennis van zaken essentieel. Ook psycho-educatie in de vorm van informatie, tips en advies, behoort tot de verpleegkundige taken.
