Samenvatting

Diabetes is de meest voorkomende chronische ziekte in de huisartspraktijk; in een doorsnee huisartspraktijk gaat het om ongeveer 130 mensen. Een ongezonde leefstijl verhoogt bij vrouwen in sterkere mate dan bij mannen het risico op het krijgen van type 2 diabetes. Diabetes verhoogt het risico van vrouwen op het ontwikkelen van hart- en vaatziekten met 30–50 %. Er zijn aanwijzingen dat huisartsen dit risico bij vrouwen onderschatten; om dit tegen te gaan kunnen ze gebruikmaken van interactieve calculators, zoals U-Prevent. Vooral in de eerste lijn komt polyfarmacie vaker voor bij vrouwen met diabetes dan bij mannen met diabetes. Er zijn aanwijzingen dat Nederlandse mannen minder vaak dan vrouwen zelf verantwoordelijkheid willen nemen voor hun diabetes, alhoewel ze vaker geneigd zijn om medicatie te nemen om alle behandeldoelen onder controle te krijgen. Mannen en vrouwen gedragen zich nauwelijks verschillend binnen de Nederlandse diabeteszorg, al maken mannen waarschijnlijk vaker gebruik van een patiëntenportaal als die mogelijkheid bestaat.
