Abstract

We conducted 4 studies to develop and cross-validate scores on a multidimensional self-report measure of suicide and anger expression, the Suicide Anger Expression Inventory-28 (SAEI-28). The SAEI-28 evaluates Suicide Rumination, Maladaptive Expression, Reactive Distress, and Adaptive Expression with 7 content specific items each. Participants were between ages 14 and 47 years old. Study 1 developed a pool of content relevant and representative items for the new inventory. Study 2 explored potential domains of the SAEI-28 items, evaluating preliminary estimates of internal consistency reliability. Study 3 examined specific structures of the SAEI-28 items and scale reliability. Study 4 evaluated the fit of the oblique 4-factor model to 2 alternative solutions. Support was found for estimates of internal consistency reliability for the scales. Criterion-related validity and potential correlates for the SAEI-28 scales were also assessed.
Voetnoten
1
Our review included previous versions of the STAXI-2 including the Anger Expression Scale by Spielberger et al. (1985). The current study does not focus on the distinctions between state anger (i.e., transient negative feeling state) and trait anger (i.e., frequent and pervasive negative feeling state). Rather, the focus is on the construct of anger experience as a basic emotion.

2
As in previous investigations (Ganellen 2007; Lonigan et al. 1994), we did not explore independent validation of the multidisciplinary team assessments.

3
Although sample sizes for the clinical and nonclinical subgroups were small, EFA with the separate samples resulted in essentially the same item-factor solutions. The magnitudes of the loadings were thus maximized by combining the subsample data.

4
We are aware of the concerns noted by Schmitt and Kuljanin (2008) regarding the unnecessary implementation of measurement invariance analyses by researchers when “the [current] research objective is not the comparison of observed mean differences between groups” (page 214). Because the aims of the current investigations were to construct and explore preliminary psychometric properties of the SAEI-28, future investigations that focus on mean SAEI-28 differences between groups (e.g., clinical-suicidal vs. clinical nonsuicidal) could examine tests of invariance such as configural and metric. Indeed, the issue of measurement invariance is far too complex to be addressed concurrently in an instrument development project.

The item correlation matrix of the CFA can be obtained from the first author.

6
For coefficient alpha estimates reported in the text, we computed the 95% confidence interval in 1,000 bootstrap replications.
