Depressieve stoornis bij Belgische eerstejaarsstudenten

Prevalentie, academische impact en zorggebruik

Samenvatting

Inleiding: Er is weinig bekend over epidemiologische aspecten (prevalentie, comorbiditeit, impact en zorggebruik) van de depressieve stoornis bij universiteitsstudenten. In een descriptief-epidemiologisch onderzoek naar de depressieve stoornis (volgens DSM-IV) bij eerstejaarsstudenten aan de KU Leuven, België, werden de 12-maanden prevalentie, de psychiatrische comorbiditeit, het zorggebruik en de academische impact gemeten.
Methode: Elektronisch vragenlijstonderzoek op basis van een cross-sectionele gewogen onderzoeksopzet bij alle eerstejaarsstudenten van de KU Leuven (N = 5.460, responspercentage gecorrigeerd voor drop-out is 51,8%) tussen oktober 2014 en mei 2017. De depressieve stoornis werd gemeten met het Composite International Diagnostic Instrument – Screener (CIDI-SC).
Resultaten: De 12-maanden prevalentie van een depressieve stoornis bij studenten werd geschat op 13,6% van de gehele populatie eerstejaarsstudenten. De prevalentie van een majeure depressieve episode (MDE) hing sterk samen met verschillende andere emotionele problemen, waaronder gegeneraliseerde angst, (hypo)manie en suïcidaliteit. De impact van MDE op het academisch functioneren, gemeten met het gewogen eindpercentage, bedroeg 3,6 à 6,4%. MDE hing eveneens samen met een hoger risico voor het falen van het eerste jaar aan de universiteit (oddsratio = 1,5–2,0). Het 12-maanden zorggebruik was 21,5%.
Conclusie: MDE komt vaak voor bij eerstejaarsstudenten. Ondanks de hoge prevalentie en de aanzienlijke impact zoeken weinig studenten hulp.
