Samenvatting

Dementie behelst stoornissen op verschillende cognitieve functiedomeinen, waardoor uiteindelijk de zelfredzaamheid verstoord raakt. De prevalentie van dementie neemt op hogere leeftijd aanzienlijk toe. De meest voorkomende oorzaken van dementie zijn: dementie door de ziekte van Alzheimer, frontotemporale dementie, dementie met lewylichaampjes, vasculaire dementie en dementie door de ziekte van Parkinson. Op oudere leeftijd is er meestal sprake van een combinatie van verschillende oorzaken. De diagnose wordt gesteld op basis van het klinische beeld, de anamnese en de heteroanamnese. Een verbeterd preventief cardiovasculair risicomanagement en betere leefstijl (waaronder voeding) hebben ertoe geleid dat dementie nu ongeveer 25 % minder voorkomt dan 25 jaar geleden op grond van demografische samenstelling van de bevolking werd gedacht. Naast medicamenteuze symptomatische behandeling vormt ondersteuning van mantelzorgers de pijler in het behandelbeleid. Oefentherapie is de meest effectieve fysiotherapeutische interventie. Oefentherapie heeft een positief effect bij mensen met dementie op het verbeteren van ADL en cognitie.
