6. De veranderende relatie tussen lichaam en geest gedurende de levensloop: adolescenten

Samenvatting

De adolescentie is de periode tussen de kinderjaren en de volwassenheid. In deze ontwikkelingsfase vinden veel veranderingen plaats, zowel op ontwikkelingspsychologisch en systemisch als op biologisch en neuropsychologisch vlak. Hoewel de adolescentie voor velen relatief soepel verloopt, staat deze periode ook bekend als een heftige fase. De adolescentie is een pivotale fase in de ontwikkeling van psychopathologie. In dit hoofdstuk bespreken we de verschillende veranderingen in deze levensfase, met een focus op het lichaam en de rol van ‘embodiment’ (de notie dat psychische processen hun oorsprong vinden in lichamelijkheid) meer in het algemeen. Lichamelijkheid, seksualiteit en agressie zijn, juist in deze tijd waarin sociale media een centrale rol spelen, belangrijke thema’s in de vorming van de identiteit en de lichaamsbeleving van adolescenten. In dit hoofdstuk geven we een overzicht hiervan en we illustreren dit aan de hand van een casus.
