18. De tandheelkundige aspecten van obstructieve slaapapneu

Abstract

Het obstructieve slaapapneusyndroom (OSAS) wordt gekenmerkt door het herhaald optreden van volledige of partiële obstructies van de hogere luchtweg (American Academy of Sleep Medicine Task Force 1999). Deze obstructies leiden tot een verminderde luchtstroom of volledige onderbreking ervan in de hogere luchtweg, ondanks de aanwezige ademhalingsinspanningen van de borst- en buikspieren. Het opheffen van deze obstructies gaat vaak gepaard met een luid snurkgeluid en ontwakingen. De verstoorde ventilatie tijdens de obstructies leidt vaak ook tot zuurstofdesaturatie.
