Samenvatting

Zelfdomesticatie is een uiterst veelzijdig cumulatief biologisch en cultureel proces waarmee de mens al heel vroeg haar eigen evolutie vorm heeft gegeven. De rode draad hierin is de selectie tegen agressie, de behoefte aan veiligheid, sociale tolerantie, de intentie tot samenwerking en het gemak waarmee we van elkaar leren. Dit proces begint met de evolutie van habituele tweevoetigheid omstreeks zes miljoen jaar geleden. Dit luidt een radicale verandering in van het voortplantingsgedrag, de emotionaliteit, het uiterlijk en het sociaal leervermogen. Dat laatste schept de voorwaarde voor de ontwikkeling van technische en communicatieve vaardigheden en gaat gepaard met een exceptionele groei van de hersenen. Hieruit vloeit een samenleving voort, zoals we die nu kennen.
