De rol van verklaringen in de keuze van effectieve interventies

Samenvatting

Een belangrijke reden om een specifieke interventie te kiezen is de verwachting dat daarmee problemen op effectieve wijze verminderd zullen worden. Wij hebben onderzocht of de mate van effectiviteit die orthopedagogen en psychologen van verschillende interventies verwachten, samenhangt met de verklaringen die zij geven voor de problemen van een kind. We vroegen veertig clinici om voor twee gevalsbeschrijvingen een causaal model te tekenen dat weergaf hoe zij de problemen van de betreffende kinderen verklaarden en om tevens een rangorde van interventies te geven naar verwachte effectiviteit. We vergeleken de effectiviteit van de interventies die we berekenden uit de modellen van de deelnemers met de rangordes die zij gaven. De deelnemers construeerden verschillende modellen om problemen te verklaren en hadden verschillende verwachtingen ten aanzien van de effectiviteit van interventies. Op basis van de individuele modellen konden we echter voorspellen welke interventies zij het effectiefst vonden.
