De rol van het circadiane systeem bij winterdepressie

Abstract

Winterdepressie is een seizoengebonden aandoening waarbij patiënten alleen in de herfst en/of de winter depressieve klachten ervaren. Het merendeel van deze patiënten kan goed behandeld worden met lichttherapie. Het optreden van seizoengebonden gedrag bij dieren, zoals bijvoorbeeld winterslaap, staat onder invloed van de circadiane pacemaker. Dit inwendige tijdsmechanisme is zeer gevoelig voor licht dat op de retina valt en is bij zoogdieren gelegen in de suprachiasmatische nucleï van de hersenen. Lang vormden de hypothesen over de betrokkenheid van het circadiane systeem bij winterdepressie een plausibele verklaring voor het ontstaan en de behandeling van deze aandoening. Dit artikel bespreekt deze hypothesen, de achtergronden en het onderzoek dat hiernaar is uitgevoerd aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen.
