De rol van de biologische klok en het autonome zenuwstelsel bij wakker worden

Samenvatting

Wakker worden is een duidelijk voorbeeld van een gebeurtenis waarbij een interne (biologische) klok van groot belang is. In dit artikel bespreken wij een aantal belangrijke neurale mechanismen die de biologische klok gebruikt om te zorgen dat we efficiënt en gecoördineerd wakker worden en opstaan. Eerst laten we zien hoe de biologische klok zijn dagelijkse ritme oplegt aan de hypothalamus-hypofysebijnierschors- as, via projecties naar neuro-endocriene en preautonome neuronen in de hypothalamus. Daarna bespreken we hoe de biologische klok het dagelijks ritme in de plasmaspiegels van glucose en melatonine aanstuurt en tevens het dagelijkse ritme in het cardiovasculaire systeem reguleert. Deze processen verlopen grotendeels via projecties naar de sympathische en parasympathische preautonome neuronen in de hypothalamus. Ten slotte laten we zien dat de orexine producerende neuronen in de laterale hypothalamus voor dit proces van wakker worden een belangrijke ‘spin in het web’ vormen.
