De rol van allergie/atopie bij astma

Samenvatting

Atopie is een bekende risicofactor voor astma. Astma lijkt het resultaat te zijn van een proces dat vroeg in het leven, mogelijk zelfs al voor de geboorte, geïnitieerd wordt. Niet alleen neemt de laatste decennia de prevalentie van astma toe, ook van andere IgE-gemedieerde aandoeningen, zoals allergische rinitis, voedselallergie en atopische dermatitis, neemt de prevalentie toe. Er is een duidelijke relatie tussen astma en allergie, maar de risicofactoren voor astma zijn niet altijd dezelfde als die voor allergische sensibilisatie.

Dit artikel gaat in op de risicofactoren voor het ontstaan van astma en allergie, zoals luchtweginfecties, obesitas, voeding, probiotica, opgroeien op een boerderij, sigarettenrook, luchtvervuiling en blootstelling aan allergenen. Daarnaast bespreekt het de primaire preventie met behulp van multipele interventies, de invloed van allergeensanering op de ernst van de klachten en de plaats van immunotherapie bij astma.
