De pragmatische aspecten van de menselijke communicatie 50 jaar later

Samenvatting

Het boek Pragmatics of human communication (1967; Nederlandse vertaling De pragmatische aspecten van de menselijke communicatie, 1970) was een van de eerste boeken over intermenselijke communicatie en het groeide uit tot een standaard theorieboek voor onder meer de vakgebieden communicatie en psychotherapie. Face-to-Face dialogue (in druk), geschreven door een van de auteurs van het oorspronkelijke werk, beschrijft het onderzoek uit de daaropvolgende decennia, dat in resultaten overeenkomsten en verschillen opleverde met de uitkomsten in het oorspronkelijke werk; vandaar dit artikel. De doelen en het kader van de studies zijn hetzelfde, dat wil zeggen: er wordt gekeken naar interactie in plaats van naar individuen, en naar dialoog in plaats van naar intrapsychische processen. De theoretische en empirische vorderingen hebben geleid tot aanpassingen van de expliciet voorlopige axioma’s uit het oorspronkelijke boek. Voorbeelden: (i) ‘alle gedrag is communicatie’ is door theoretische verfijning en microanalyse verworpen, ten gunste van een meer nauwkeurige focus op ‘co-speech gestures’; (ii) ‘je kunt niet niet communiceren’ is beter overeind gebleven; voor de situationele context die leidt tot ‘diskwalificatie’ (ambiguïteit) is overtuigend bewijs gevonden; en (iii) de synchronie van digitale en analoge elementen van een dialoog levert geïntegreerde boodschappen op, in plaats van afzonderlijke kanalen.
