De neurowetenschappen, een zegen voor de psychotherapie?

De visie van een psychiater-psychotherapeut

Samenvatting

Of de neurowetenschappen een zegen zijn voor de psychotherapie hangt af van het standpunt dat men inneemt in het filosofische debat over brein en geest (philosophy of mind). Een reductionistisch-fysicalistische positie vormt een bedreiging voor de psychotherapie. De eigenheid van de psychotherapie wordt vanuit deze positie miskend en de finaliteit verschuift van subjectieve beleving (veranderingen van denken, voelen en doen) naar neurofysiologische veranderingen. Neemt men daarentegen een niet-reductionistische positie in die de gelijkwaardigheid van de parallelle beschrijvingsniveaus (neurowetenschappen en menswetenschappen) respecteert, dan dragen de neurowetenschappen bij aan de verdere ontwikkeling van psychotherapie. Zowel de theorievorming, klinische toepassing als de indicatiestelling kan er wel bij varen.
