De Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam: een overzicht van 17 jaar onderzoek naar verandering in dagelijks functioneren

Samenvatting

In dit artikel wordt verslag gedaan van resultaten uit de Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam (LASA). LASA is een onderzoek naar determinanten en gevolgen van veranderingen in dagelijks functioneren. Voor dit artikel is verandering in het lichamelijk functioneren als centraal thema gekozen. Uit de longitudinale resultaten komt naar voren dat veel ouderen functieverlies ervaren, vooral naarmate hun leeftijd toeneemt. Een veelheid van factoren, zoals chronische ziekten, cognitieve achteruitgang, depressie, sociaal economische status en leefstijl, hangt samen met functieverlies. Voor een deel zijn dit oorzakelijke factoren, voor een ander deel zijn het kenmerken van groepen met verhoogde kans op achteruitgang. Uit trendanalyses blijkt dat de prevalentie van lichamelijke beperkingen geen vast gegeven is, maar in de tijd verandert. Het LASA-onderzoek geeft aanwijzingen dat deze prevalentie toeneemt bij ouderen vanaf 55 jaar. In het licht van de absolute en relatieve toename van het aantal ouderen in de bevolking is het dan ook van groot belang om te zorgen dat achteruitgang in lichamelijk functioneren minder vaak voorkomt en naar latere leeftijd wordt verschoven. Op grond van de resultaten worden hiertoe enkele suggesties gedaan. Tevens worden richtingen voor vervolgonderzoek aangegeven.
