De kwetsbaarheid van de narcistische zelfwaardering bij kinderen

samenvatting

Zelfbeeld en zelfwaardering worden tegenwoordig zowel in de literatuur als in de klinische praktijk beschreven in termen van gezond versus kwetsbaar. Doel van dit onderzoek was om een aantal kenmerkende aspecten van het kwetsbare zelfbeeld bij kinderen in kaart te brengen en tegenover het gezonde zelfbeeld te plaatsen. Narcisme werd daarbij gezien als het prototype van een kwetsbaar zelfbeeld. Uit de resultaten blijkt dat een narcistische en een gezonde zelfwaardering twee van elkaar te onderscheiden zelfbeeldvarianten zijn. Een gezond zelfbeeld wordt gekenmerkt door gevoelens van zowel zelfcompetentie als zelfacceptatie en een sterk besef van coherentie. De narcistische zelfwaardering wordt uitsluitend gekenmerkt door een hoge mate van zelfcompetentie en is tegelijkertijd sterk afhankelijk van tijdelijke succes- of faalervaringen.
