De invloed van rumineren en afleiding zoeken op depressieve klachten bij niet-klinische kinderen en adolescenten: een meta-analyse

Samenvatting

Deze meta-analyse had als doel om te onderzoeken in hoeverre de veronderstellingen van de Response Styles Theory (RST), betreffende de relatie tussen rumineren en afleiding zoeken en depressieve klachten en geslachtsverschillen in het gebruik van deze responsestijlen, ondersteund worden in niet-klinische kinderen en adolescenten. In het samenvatten van de literatuur werden effectmaten (ES) berekend voor cross-sectionele en longitudinale studies. De resultaten lieten zien dat stabiele en significante ES werden gevonden voor de relatie tussen rumineren en depressie (zowel cross-sectioneel als longitudinaal), behoudens wanneer rekening werd gehouden met de voormetingen van depressie in de longitudinale studies. Ten slotte werd een significant en stabiel geslachtsverschil gevonden voor rumineren bij adolescenten. Samengevat, deze bevindingen leveren gedeeltelijke ondersteuning voor de RST en impliceren dat rumineren een cognitieve kwetsbaarheidfactor is voor depressieve klachten bij adolescenten, en middels diverse therapeutische technieken aangepakt kan worden.
