5. De invloed van radiotherapie in het hoofd-halsgebied op behandelingen met orale implantaten

Abstract

Het plaatsen van orale implantaten bij patiënten die vanwege een maligne tumor in het hoofd-halsgebied radiotherapie hebben ondergaan, houdt een zeker risico in. Het risico bestaat uit het verhoogde algemene risico van implantaatverlies ten gevolge van het falen van de osseo-integratie en uit het optreden van osteoradionecrose. Radiotherapie heeft invloed op zowel de zachte weefsels als het bot. De schadelijke gevolgen zijn een verminderd aantal capillaire bloedvaten, een verminderd aantal osteocyten en een verminderde osteoblastenactiviteit. Capillaire bloedvaten blijken het meest kwetsbaar, vooral in het bot.
