Alzheimer’s disease is the most common subtype of dementia. In 2010 it was estimated that 36 million people where living with dementia worldwide and this number is expected to double every twenty years, because the population is aging. After many years of research there are still no therapeutic options to cure this devastating disease. One of the aims of genetic research in Alzheimer’s disease is to gain further insight in the exact pathogenesis of this disease and, ultimately, to contribute to developing new treatment possibilities. In recent years, the focus of genetic research in Alzheimer’s disease has shifted from small scale candidate gene studies to large scale Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS). In this paper an overview is given of the development and current status of genetic research in Alzheimer’s disease.
