De ethiek van het persoonlijk genoom

Samenvatting

Door de dalende kosten en de steeds krachtigere en snellere technologie komen we in een tijdperk waarin mensen de beschikking kunnen krijgen over hun ‘persoonlijk genoom’: een persoonlijke genetische database met het volledige genoom van een individu. Genoombreed onderzoek leidt tot een ongekende hoeveelheid genetische (risico-)informatie over een individu. Ook andere ontwikkelingen in het genetisch landschap vragen om reflectie, zoals de groei van biobanken en de opkomst van commerciële internetbedrijfjes die zonder tussenkomst van de gezondheidszorg genetische testen aanbieden. In dit artikel wordt eerst een overzicht geschetst van ethisch relevante ontwikkelingen in het genetisch landschap. Daarna wordt besproken welk type genetische informatie teruggekoppeld dient te worden naar mensen wier genoom in kaart gebracht is.
