De effecten van aantrekkelijkheid en sociale status op de datingvoorkeur van heteroseksuele adolescenten

Een experimentele studie

Samenvatting

Dit onderzoek had als doel de datingvoorkeuren van adolescenten te onderzoeken gebaseerd op aantrekkelijkheid en sociale status van een potentiële partner. De onderzoekspopulatie bestond uit 1913 adolescenten (leeftijd 13-18 jaar). Deelnemers beoordeelden het belang van verschillende partnerkarakteristieken door middel van zelfrapportages. In het experiment werd datingvoorkeur gemeten met behulp van vignettes van of een aantrekkelijke of minder aantrekkelijke potentiële partner met of een hoge of een lage sociale status. In het zelfrapportagegedeelte werd aantrekkelijkheid als belangrijker beoordeeld door jongens dan door meisjes. Sociale status was voor zowel jongens als meisjes niet erg belangrijk. In het experimentele gedeelte, werd bewijs gevonden voor het belang van aantrekkelijkheid in zowel de datingvoorkeur van jongens als meisjes. Sociale status was alleen belangrijk voor de datingvoorkeur van jongens wanneer de potentiële partner aantrekkelijk was. Sociale status was echter voor de datingvoorkeur van meisjes zowel in de aantrekkelijke als de minder aantrekkelijke conditie belangrijk. Ten slotte vonden we dat de perceptie van eigen aantrekkelijkheid de relatie tussen aantrekkelijkheid en datingvoorkeur voor zowel meisjes als jongens modereerde.
