Samenvatting

De ziekte van Alzheimer (ad) is een neurodegeneratieve aandoening waarvan de prevalentie sterk samenhangt met leeftijd. De prevalentie neemt toe van 7% bij mensen van 65 jaar tot 25% bij mensen ouder dan 80 jaar (Forstl, 1998; Ott et al., 1998). In Nederland wordt het aantal patiënten met ad momenteel geschat op ruim 190.000 met een incidentie van 4.000 per jaar. Gezien de dubbele vergrijzing zal dit aantal snel toenemen tot naar schatting meer dan 412.000 patiënten in 2050 (Health Council of the Netherlands, 2002).
