Samenvatting

In dit hoofdstuk worden de anatomie, fysiologie, embryologie en seksuele differentiatie van de geslachtsdelen en de bekkenbodem besproken. Tevens wordt ruim aandacht besteed aan endocriene en neurale regulatiemechanismen, inclusief een overzicht van de laatste inzichten uit de hersenwetenschappen. Een aantal genitale en endocriene afwijkingen die voor het seksueel functioneren relevant zijn, worden kort geïntroduceerd, evenals relevante pathologie. Ook wordt kort gerefereerd aan het verband tussen de biologie van seksualiteit en seksuele disfuncties en/of parafilie. De kennis en de concepten die in dit hoofdstuk centraal staan, vormen een basis die de lezer in staat stelt veel van de andere hoofdstukken in dit boek, waarin specifieke velden van de seksuologie verder worden uitgediept, beter te begrijpen.
