De definitieve cuspidaten in de maxilla hebben voor de dentitie een cruciale esthetische en functionele waarde (Liu en Zhang, 2008). Desondanks zijn deze cuspidaten na de verstandskiezen de tweede meest voorkomende gebitselementen die impactie vertonen. Hun prevalentie tot impactie bedraagt 1-3% (Walker et al., 2005; Ericson et al., 2000). Meestal wordt de impactie vastgesteld tijdens klinisch routineonderzoek. Foutieve aanpak of falen tijdens de diagnose kan leiden tot ernstige gevolgen voor de verdere ontwikkeling en eruptie van de betreffende cuspidaat en buurelementen. Een van de mogelijke gevolgen is resorptie van een buurelement (Ericson et al., 2000). …
