Contextuele therapie voor paren die de primaire mantelzorgers zijn van ouders met de ziekte van Alzheimer

Samenvatting

Tegelijk met de vergrijzing van de bevolking neemt ook het aantal mensen met de ziekte van Alzheimer toe. De meerderheid van de mensen met deze aandoening wordt verzorgd door een familielid, meestal de partner of een volwassen kind. Mantelzorgende volwassen kinderen hebben specifieke behoeften en verkeren in unieke situaties waardoor ze een verhoogd risico lopen op mantelzorgbelasting en burn-outklachten. Hoewel aan mantelzorgers van een ziek familielid al wel individuele en gezinstherapie is gegeven, is nog weinig onderzoek gedaan naar de mogelijke rol van relatietherapie in het verbeteren van de uitkomsten voor mantelzorgers. In dit artikel bekijken we de factoren die bijdragen aan de belasting van mantelzorgende volwassen kinderen en beschrijven we contextuele therapie als behandeling van deze problemen in relatietherapie. Aan de hand van een voorbeeldcasus illustreren we hoe de begrippen rechtvaardigheid, balans, loyaliteitsconflicten en constructieve/destructieve vormen van recht (‘entitlement’, red.) toepasbaar zijn op de mantelzorgsituatie. We identificeren gemeenschappelijke dynamieken bij paren van wie een of beide partners als mantelzorgers primair verantwoordelijk zijn voor de verzorging van ouders met de ziekte van Alzheimer, en we geven suggesties voor hoe de problemen van deze paren in relatietherapie kunnen worden beoordeeld en behandeld.
