Context is belangrijk: kritiek en accommodatie door naasten in relatie tot de behandelattitude van mensen met angstklachten

Samenvatting

Achtergrond: veel mensen met angstklachten zoeken geen hulp vanwege negatieve ideeën over behandeling. Naasten (bijv. partner, familieleden, vrienden) zijn vaak nauw betrokken bij behandelbeslissingen, maar de rol van specifiek relationeel gedrag bij behandelambivalentie is nog niet eerder onderzocht.
Doelstellingen: In deze studie wordt de relatie onderzocht tussen sociale predictoren (accommodatie bij angstsymptomen en gepercipieerde kritiek door naasten) en behandelambivalentie.
Methode: Leden uit de gemeenschap die voldeden aan de criteria voor een angstgerelateerde stoornis (N = 65) en studenten met een hoge mate van angstklachten (N = 307) hebben deelgenomen aan een online studie. De deelnemers moesten zich voorstellen dat zij overwogen om te beginnen met Cognitieve Gedragstherapie (CGT) voor hun angstklachten en vulden vervolgens een vragenlijst in over behandelambivalentie. Daarna vulden zij vragenlijsten in over accommodatie en gepercipieerde kritiek door naasten. Aan de hand van lineaire regressie hebben we de voorspellende waarde van deze variabelen onderzocht, terwijl gecontroleerd werd voor het type steekproef (klinisch/analoog) en de behandelgeschiedenis.
Resultaten: Een sterkere reactie op kritiek van naasten en een grotere mate van accommodatie door naasten is gerelateerd aan meer ambivalente attitude van de deelnemers met angstsymptomen. Deze predictoren blijven significant, ook als is gecontroleerd voor behandelgeschiedenis en type steekproef
Conclusies: Als het gaat om behandelattitude is de relationele context belangrijk. Cliënten die ambivalente gevoelens hebben over een start maken met therapie, kunnen gebaat zijn bij een gesprek over de invloed van hun sociale omgeving op deze ambivalentie.
