Samenvatting

Veel patiënten hebben het gevoel dat de periode van onderzoeken, het te horen krijgen van de diagnose, de ingrepen en behandelingen, en het verblijf in het ziekenhuis, hen overkomt alsof zij er zelf geen deel aan hebben. De verpleegkundige vormt een belangrijke bron van steun om de verwarrende werkelijkheid beter hanteerbaar te maken. Actief luisteren naar de ervaringen van de patiënt en zijn sociale omgeving, en het ondersteunen van het individuele verwerkingsproces, staan daarin centraal. Dat maakt het mogelijk om de behandeling en zorg zo goed mogelijk op de eigenheid van de individuele patiënt af te stemmen. Het is bij uitstek de verpleegkundige die op cruciale momenten in de ervaringen van de patiënt kan delen en hem kan helpen de regie in eigen hand te houden. Het stimuleren tot gezamenlijke besluitvorming en het behartigen van de belangen van de patiënt binnen de multidisciplinaire samenwerking zijn daarbij van bijzondere betekenis. Binnen de oncologische zorg blijven verpleegkundigen zich voortdurend ontwikkelen in de CanMEDS-rol Communicatie.
