Samenvatting

In dit hoofdstuk staat een welbekende vorm van commerciële seks centraal: prostitutie, ofwel sekswerk. Prostitutie heeft altijd bestaan en zal altijd blijven bestaan, maar is behept met een erg negatief imago. In dit hoofdstuk wordt stilgestaan bij verschillende aspecten. Eerst wordt ingegaan op het wettelijke kader dat in de meeste landen rond prostitutie bestaat en worden de voor- en nadelen van criminalisering en decriminalisering van sekswerk op een rij gezet. Vervolgens worden de kenmerken van sekswerk in Nederland en België belicht. Verder is er aandacht voor de motieven die vrouwen en mannen hebben om seksuele diensten aan te bieden (en ook om ervoor te betalen) en voor de maatschappelijke en individuele risico’s van sekswerk. Tot slot houdt de auteur een pleidooi om sekswerk meer te zien als een legitieme vorm van seksueel verkeer en beschrijft zij wat daarvoor nodig is.
