Commentary on the Distress Tolerance Special Issue

Abstract

This commentary is based on a 7-manuscript special series on distress tolerance (DT) and its relationship with psychopathology and behavioral health problems. The commentary highlights study findings in the context of core issues regarding DT as a construct and its measurement. Issues for future consideration also are discussed.

It could be argued that both studies were at least somewhat interested in examining the reliability of specific DT measures but for the purposes here we limit our focus to the implications for understanding stability of the DT construct.

While the special series paper by Hawkins et al. (2013) may at first appear to be relevant to questions of temporal stability of DT, it should be clearly noted that it cannot speak to the stability question because it did not measure DT at the second assessment point.
