This book presents a framework for educators to provide multiple academic instruction and assessment methods to better prepare students with a range of disabilities for post secondary school life. This framework promotes a curriculum that is effective in teaching a blend of academic instruction and functional living skills. The authors define this framework as the universal design for transition (UDT). This is a relatively new concept for transition planning within the school system that “focuses on creating links between the academic content and transition planning, instruction, and goals” (p. 9). “The application of UDT requires that additional characteristics multiple life domains, multiple means of assessment, student self-determination, multiple resources/perspectives are included” (pp. 9, 10). The authors discuss how UDT is a “barrier-free” framework that includes an instructional curriculum that is flexible and adaptable to a variety of individual strengths and needs. …
