Cognitieve kenmerken van volwassenen met de autistische stoornis en de stoornis van Asperger aan de hand van WAIS-III-profielen

Samenvatting

Uit het onderzoek komt naar voren dat volwassenen met de autistische stoornis, volwassenen met de stoornis van Asperger en een neurotypische controlegroep, allen met een normale tot hoge intelligentie, vergelijkbaar zijn wat betreft Verbaal begrip, Perceptueel inzicht en Werkgeheugen. Bij de participanten met de autistische stoornis is er sprake van een relatief trage informatieverwerking in vergelijking met de twee andere groepen. Het kost hen meer tijd om informatie te verwerken. Dit is mogelijk toe te schrijven aan een sterke detailgerichtheid en een daarmee samenhangende bottom-up-strategie van denken en werken. Bij de volwassenen met de stoornis van Asperger zijn geen significante afwijkingen geconstateerd in vergelijking met de neurotypische controlegroep.
Waarschijnlijk hebben volwassenen met de stoornis van Asperger, en in enige mate ook de volwassenen met de autistische stoornis, door de jaren heen op diverse gebieden hun beperkingen leren compenseren en camoufleren. Hierdoor komen de specifieke kenmerken op het gebied van theory of mind, centrale coherentie en executief functioneren niet of slechts deels tot uiting in hun intelligentieprofiel. Dit impliceert dat het intelligentieprofiel geen duidelijkheid kan verschaffen over de eventuele aanwezigheid van een autismespectrumstoornis (ASS).Wel kan het intelligentieprofiel zinvolle informatie verschaffen over de mogelijkheden en beperkingen binnen werk en opleiding.
