Abstract

The literature is replete with varying definitions of resilience, a selection of which were presented in Chap. 1 of this volume. These definitions range from a focus on adaptation to some that emphasise growth and development. Some definitions ascribe resilience as a feature of an individual’s adaptation whilst others emphasise collective and communal resilience, taking into account ecology and biology. The benefit of considering resilience through the lens of coping has been noted, and that is the approach that underscores this volume.
