Abstract

How do we begin to challenge the current hegemonic status of the psychiatric discourse in neoliberal society? In this chapter, Cohen suggests some practical ways in which we can undermine the power of the mental health system towards eventual abolition. This includes the setting of a radical research agenda in which psychiatric power and the construction of mental illness labels are the central foci for investigation, the challenging of academic “apologists” who blindly support the continuation of the psy-professions, and closer collaboration between left wing activists, survivors, researchers, and community groups in direct action and public protests against psychiatric violence.
