Abstract
This chapter is the first of four chapters providing detail about the Formative or Development phase of the Intervention Research Framework. A summary of the components that contribute to the Formative phase of the Intervention Research Framework is provided, however the key emphasis of this chapter is to provide information on how theories contribute to the Formative development of intervention research. In the first instance, this chapter provides an understanding of the Prevention Framework and how school drug education fits into a comprehensive community approach to public health intervention. This chapter then offers a summary of commonly used theories and models in public health interventions under the headings: individual behaviour change theories, community theories that enable individual behaviour change, organizational change theories, and theories that describe dissemination or diffusion into policy and practice. Further details about each theory can be found in other texts, however, this chapter brings together most of the pertinent theories in the public health field. The final section of the chapter details the theories most associated with the SHAHRP program.
