Abstract

Under Causal Agency Theory, volitional action is based on conscious choices that reflect one’s preferences. Conscious choices are intentionally conceived, deliberate acts that occur without direct external influence. The expression of preference and choice making are critical components of this process. This chapter reviews the literature in preference and choice making as it pertains to human agentic action and self-determination and provide a description of the development of these skills.
