Overview of Mental Disorders in Chinese Cultures: Review of Epidemiological and Clinical Studies

  • Chapter
Normal and Abnormal Behavior in Chinese Culture

Part of the book series: Culture, Illness, and Healing ((CIHE,volume 2))

Abstract

Psychiatric epidemiology, a relatively new branch of psychiatry, has witnessed tremendous growth since the end of World War II (cf. Leighton 1959; Hughes et al. 1960; Leighton et al. 1963; Srole et al. 1962; Langner and Michael 1963; Lemkau et al. 1964; Lin 1953; Lin et al. 1969;Hollingshead and Redlich 1958; Gurin et al. 1960). The information derived from epidemiological studies of mental disorders not only serves the practical purpose of providing a rational basis for planning mental health care services, but also helps us better understand the causes and distribution of various mental illnesses (Cooper and Morgan 1973; Robins 1978).

Notes

  1. With respect to abuse of hallucinogens: although several hallucinogens have been known and used by Chinese medicinally but principally for Taoist religious purposes for two millenia, there are no reports describing significant abuse of these agents either in the past or at present that we are aware of.

  2. In a community attitudinal survey in 1963, Rin (1978) found that the majority of Chinese believe that sicknesses are always somatogenic, and are caused by weakening of some important physiological functions. They also tend to believe that psychosis is incurable and cases need to be isolated. Twelve years later, another community survey (Rin et al. 1977) revealed a strikingly similar tendency. People still tend to believe that the treatment of psychosis is difficult and expensive, that psychotic patients are not trustworthy and should be isolated or avoided. However, age and education were found to be negatively related to this stigmatizing tendency. Young subjects with greater exposure to education (more modernized sections of the population) tended to understand more accurately the nature of psychosis and be more tolerant and accepting, less fearful and critical of psychotic patients.
