Abstract
In this Chapter we develop the LISREL model formally, and assume some knowledge of elementary statistics. While understanding the model will prove useful in the long run, it is not strictly prerequisite for the LISREL applications in this book. It provides a valuable reference section and guide to the statistical theory behind applied model-fitting, especially in conjunction with our first application of the package in Section 8.4. The less mathematically-minded reader may wish to skim this Chapter for now, and return to it when they feel more comfortable with the practical use of LISREL for simple models.
