Abstract

Twenty-five years ago my wife and I were hired to start a public day school program for blind preschool children. Recently, I met a member of that first class. Rob had a profound hearing loss as well as being blind. For several years we could not get appropriate service for him because of his hearing loss. Another of our first students, Ken, is a graduate of Michigan State University presently working for the federal government. Ken was originally diagnosed as mentally retarded, and his parents were urged to commit him to a state institution.
