Abstract

Research on movement disorders can inform motor neuroscience by describing the effect of a given pathology on the perception-action cycle, by identifying structural-functional relationships, and by localizing processing impairments. A research program studying cognitive-motor impairments in Paridnson’s disease is described which employs movement latencies, response dynamics and EMG measures. The data reviewed focus on the initiation, production and regulation of force and are grouped into five section headings: force control and muscular activation patterns, accuracy of force production, simultaneous force control, sequential force control and the amplitude and duration components of force. In addition to the more global findings of akinesia and bradykinesia, one of the most consistent impairments observed in Parkinson’s disease patients is an inability to control force.
